As someone who grew up in the area, this introduction to citizen knowledge and involvement through Citizens Academy was most interesting. Jeff Widmer, a Sarasota novelist who took the course offered by the Sarasota Police Department, writes a very readable account that becomes a snapshot of today's crimes, criminals and the drug plague of today. This is by no means a dry academic textbook for starting a similar course. It is modern police work told by the men and women who do it and who interact with citizens on both sides of the law. I bought multiple copies, for myself, for friends and one, given its future historical significance, for the local history reference collection at my local library.Product details

A thin volume which gives a candid look into the everyday life of local policemen. Educational.
I love crime and police dramas, so I thoroughly enjoyed this over-the-shoulder look at the experiences of one person who enrolled in the Sarasota Police Department's twelve-week Citizens Academy program. It was a fascinating up-close and personal look at things behind (and in front of!) the scenes with those who risk their lives every day when they go to work. What an experience Jeff had!
